When I told people I was traveling to Singapore in June, I got one of two responses: people either increased my excitement by telling me how much of a blast I would have or said it was a poor time to visit. After the trip, I now realize that both are right. The weather could have been better, but the city was incredible. Here are my thoughts on my day wandering Singapore.

a city next to a body of water

Exploring the City

Singapore is an incredible place to explore for many reasons, including safety, ease of transport, and more. Whenever we wanted to go anywhere, the underground rail system was super easy to navigate with Apple Maps and even easier to pay for with Apple Pay. The trains, as was the rest of the city, were spotlessly clean.

We went to all the big attractions during my two-day visit to Singapore. This included Marina Bay Sands, which was incredible, as well as the Giant Trees at Gardens by the Bay. Additionally, one of the coolest spots was the Arab District which had fantastic views of a gorgeous mosque.

Of course, we did our fair share of eating too. We visited numerous food courts in malls that all seemed to have Gucci stores 😉 We also went to a hawker center for a more authentic dining experience. Regardless the food was amazing.

The Singapore Jewel

On our last day in Singapore, we decided to Grab (Singapore’s Uber) over to the airport a good time before our flight. It was not because of a lounge, but rather to visit the Singapore Jewel Terminal.

It is not a passenger terminal but rather a large mall attached to the airport. There was no need to clear security or have a boarding pass to enter.

We waited until the jewel of the Jewel turned on: the giant indoor waterfall. It was an incredible sight to see. We spent some time exploring the terminal and taking pictures before getting on a bus to our terminal to head off to Bali.

The Last Point

It rained a lot while I was in Singapore, and the sunny moments were full of humidity and heat. However, despite the summer weather in Singapore not working with us, we had an incredible time walking around the city.

My only impression of Singapore was from Crazy Rich Asians; honestly, it was not completely wrong. The city was full of luxurious malls and dining options. From the streets to transit, everything was clean and incredibly organized. Overall, my time wandering Singapore was full of fun experiences, and I highly recommend a visit.

Love Singapore. Hope to go back this fall on the SQ EWR-SIN non-stop. If you go again, I reccomend the Jurong Bird Park and walking along the river up to about Clark Quay. Great at night with plenty of eating options and people watching. Easy to do the walk from the Merlion / Marina Bay area to Clark Quay or you can hop in river taxi for good views. If you’re interested in seeing what Singapore was like in the mid 1970s, check out the movie “Saint Jack” with Ben Gazarra. All shot in Singapore with many scenes at the Raffles hotel. There’s a great location list for the film on IMDB.

      Hi Jon,
The new bird park has finally opened. It is now located nearer to the Zoo.
