The past few years I have taken advantage of Hulu’s Black Friday sales, which allows those signing up to access the platform at the discounted rate of $1.99 per month instead of the typical $7.99 per month for the with ads plan.
While Hulu is not usually my go to streaming service, I find that there are enough times throughout the year when content that I want to stream is only available on Hulu. This makes it easy to justify the $24 a year for the platform, not to mention that with The Platinum Card’s streaming service credits, the charge is wiped away.
More recently, I found out that Hulu has a discounted price for streaming for current students.
The Deal
Students get 75% off the regular Hulu streaming price, though this includes ads. Rather than costing $7.99 a month, it only costs $1.99 a month for students. .
This matches Hulu’s recent Black Friday and Cyber Monday service deals, but this is an ongoing offer that is not limited to a few days of the year. When I sign up, the main perk will be avoiding the need to cancel my existing account as well as the need to create a new Hulu membership each November. This is what has been needed in order to benefit from the Black Friday promotion since the promo price is not available for current members.
The only drawback of this deal is that you need to be a student. The price is only available for the base plan and you must be enrolled as a student at a U.S. Title IV college or university. Verification of student status is through SheerID, so it should not be difficult to prove eligibility.
Does it Make Sense to Sign-up?
As long as you watch the occasional movie or show on Hulu, it should not be too difficult to rationalize spending $24 per year for Hulu. If you find that you do not use the streaming service as much as you had thought you might, you can always cancel your membership, as you are not obligated to pay for the service for any set length of time as part of the deal.
It makes sense to sign-up even if you only watch one movie, especially since digital movie rentals can cost $3-5 per movie. Paying $1.99 for a month of access (before canceling) is reasonable even for just one show.
The Last Point
It should not be too difficult to prove student eligibility, and this is a great alternative to signing up every November (if you are student). I look forward to taking advantage of this offer for cheaper streaming.
If you have at least $2 left in your monthly streaming credit from the Amex Platinum, there is no reason to not sign-up since the price will effectively come out to $0.
