My latest observations and reflections…the importance of a global perspective. I’ve had the incredible privilege of visiting several countries in these past six weeks, some for holiday and others for business. Specifically, over these few weeks, I’ve been to Australia, New Zealand, United Arab Emirates, and Luxembourg. What have I learned?
1. People across the world are predominantly awesome…kind, supportive, proud of their home countries and eager to share their wonders.
2. It’s critical to do some homework before traveling. Knowing the history and culture of a nation makes the visit so much more valuable. Speaking a bit of the language is very much appreciated even if its simply ‘hello’ and ‘thank you’. Even in an English speaking country, admire and appreciate the local vernacular.
3. Respect others’ cultures and expectations. Dress appropriately for visits and venues; bring thoughtful gifts to people’s homes; understand customs such as for tipping; be courteous and show gratitude; ask questions and answer their questions; avoid US comparisons and don’t be judgmental.
4. Most everyone was very interested in circumstances in the USA. They know what’s happening here and want to learn more. Many of the people I met have been to the USA and most want to visit if they haven’t. The USA is still thought to be an awesome country…and it is!
5. I’m amazed by how many languages people speak. At one point, I was hearing, French, Croatian, German, Luxembourgish, Italian and English in a single conversation! I wish I could be fluent in at least one more language. I’m inspired to…think about learning another language.
6. If you can, stretch beyond your comfort zones. No..I did not bungee dive. But, the snorkeling, kayaking and hiking were extraordinary. Weather prohibited our helicopter and small plane rides, but we where ready to do both.
7. Subject to your own dietary limitations, try as many native foods as you can. Appreciate what you’re offered and understand that many will share with you what they have even if they have very little.
8. Take all the pictures you want, but don’t get so engrossed in capturing every moment that you forget to actually enjoy the views and experiences. I chose not to bring an underwater camera and simply enjoyed the awesome sights in the Great Barrier Reef. Fortunately someone else took incredible photos and shared them with us.
9. Be grateful for these opportunities. Just be grateful.
What would you add?
