On a recent trip to Virginia Beach to celebrate the graduation of a dear friend, after returning from Africa, I got to stay at one of my favorite hotels in Virginia, the Delta Hotel by Marriott Virginia Beach Bayfront Suites. Okay, that’s a long name, I know, but it is a hidden gem.

The property is excellent for families, given that it is all suites, and since it opened a few years ago, it has been my go-to in the area. This article is a review of the property:

The Room

The hotel room door opens to the living room of the suite. There is a comfortable couch that can turn into a bed, if needed, that faces a large TV. To the side of the TV is the drink section with a fridge and coffee maker.

The living room area could be better lit, with no windows, but it is still well-decorated with some throw pillows and mirrors to make it more homey. The back of the room flows into a hallway that connects to the bathroom and bedroom.

On the right is the closet area parallel to the sink, with the proper bathroom room, right behind it. Inside there is a shower and toilet.

In the actual bedroom, which is plenty spacious, there are two queen beds along the opposite wall. The bedroom also has a large TV mounted above a desk.

Once the window curtains are open, the views of the bayfront and water are incredible. The balcony is a fun perk, although the door struggled to open, and it is a great place to sit and relax.

The rest of the hotel is also well-designed, although the layout is funky. The main entrance enters on the first floor, where the lobby is. Everything from the gym to the restaurant is on the second floor. I like the spiral staircase.

Upstairs there are plenty of seating areas. Towards the front of the building is a cafe that serves Starbucks products. Further back, there is a small store offering plenty of rentals for the day if you are so inclined.

In the back of the hotel is the main restaurant, which has both indoor and outdoor seating (sit outside if the weather is nice), but more on that later. There is also an outdoor swimming pool that overlooks the bay.

Just like that, you are pretty much on the sand and ready to explore the beach. I do have to note that this property is not on the central Virginia Beach oceanfront. It is a few miles away on the bay side.

There is also a Delta Pantry, which we received access to thanks to our Marriott status. Unfortunately, there were nearly no snacks during this stay, and the room smelled quite musty, so we were not there long. Last time there were plenty of options, so your experience may differ. (Note that this picture is from a prior stay when they had snacks.)

Food and Beverage

The main hotel restaurant is Tides Coastal Kitchen, and they serve American cuisine emphasizing more seafood flare. The food is good, but nothing I would go out of my way to have.

We were meeting friends for breakfast, so I only grabbed a quick snack from the cafe. They had typical Starbucks products and drinks.

At check-in, we were given the choice of 1000 points or two food and beverage vouchers, each worth $20. We chose the latter, which bought our lunch. While I typically wish for hotels like these to include breakfast for elite members as a welcome amenity, it worked out quite well for lunch.

Booking

With rates over the weekend we were visiting breaking $550+ per night, I knew we would have to use points. We were able to redeem a free night certificate worth up to 40,000 points, along with topping it up 5,000 points.

I was happy with this redemption since we had no immediate use of the certificate and were still able to get more than 1 cent per point in value from our Bonvoy points.

The Last Point

For a family, booking into a suite with at least three beds (considering the pull-out couch, plus more if you asked for a rollaway) is a significant step up from a traditional room. In the past, we have even used Suite Night Awards to upgrade to a two-bedroom suite with two queens, a king, and a couch. There is nothing better than that for a family.

Being away from the hustle of the oceanfront and on the beach in a nice hotel is exactly what I am looking for in Virginia Beach, which is why I recommend the Delta Hotel by Marriott Virginia Beach Bayfront Suites. I mean, when the words “beach,” “bayfront,” and “suites” are all in the name of a hotel, how can you possibly go wrong?

Another benefit is the EV charging station. Also for younger kids, the bay is much safer than the rough ocean j
