I have written numerous articles about my adventures as a gluten-free traveler. I am unable to eat most airline meals because of my dietary restrictions, so when booking a flight, I always request a specialty meal. Many people are in the same boat and order specialty meals based on dietary requirements, but here is why I recommend ordering a specialty meal even if you can eat the meal normally served.

1. Higher Quality

Often specialty meals are a much higher quality than the standard meals the airlines serve. This is because specialty meals are made in much smaller quantities, meaning more likely than not, more attention was focused on it. The type of specialty meal, gluten free, vegetarian, kosher, etc., doesn’t matter. If a dietary restriction needs to be met the airline will likely focus more attention making sure it is healthy for the passenger to consume.

2. Quicker service

While not always, flight attendants normally bring out the specialty meals before they begin the meal service for the rest of the passengers. This royal treatment is nice, especially when the passenger in the row in front of you is indecisive between chicken and pasta.

Although it requires an extra step with your flights to request a specialty meal, I often find that the effort is worth it.
